Cave paintings at Lascaux, France, dating from about 13,000 B.C. This image shows a leaping cow and several horses. Scholars generally agree that these cave paintings had an important mystical and religious meaning to their creators. This mysticism about graphical representations of sacred things is (I believe) carried forward to the Middle Ages, when books of chant were venerated for their mystical qualities. |
