Where found:

the NEUMES website
a manuscript, facsimile, or digital image of the source to be transcribed to be supplied by the transcriber (perhaps stored in an online digital image archive)
a text editor or an XML editor Microsoft Notepad, for example, or Macromedia Dreamweaver
an existing correct NeumesXML transcription Contact the NEUMES Project for a resource transcription to modify

2.2. New to XML?: Some Tips for Beginners

It is highly recommended to work from an existing transcription and edit the content as detailed in this manual.
NOTE: Programming background and a knowledge of HTML or XML is not required, nor is a large investment of time and effort in learning these languages. Scan a model transcription for the NEUMES mnemonic code names and replace them as necessary with data representing the new chant to be transcribed.

Method 1: Computer-Assisted Data-Entry

  1. Run the Data-Entry Applet from the NEUMES website.
  2. Refer to section 3 of this primer for the sequence of tags in the transcription process.

Method 2: Manual Editing/Data-Entry

  1. Import a correctly-formatted NeumesXML transcription into Microsoft Notepad or a comparable text editor and save the transcription with a new filename.
  2. Where possible, maintain all beginning and ending tags (the 'metadata') of the existing transcription and replace the information within the tags with data specific to the new transcription.
  3. Refer to section 3 of this primer for references and details about the transcription process.
